Works for me, considering I utterly failed to organise one at the start of August.

When you say theme do you mean "black and white ball" or something more specific than web 3.0?

"Me, me, me" says me jumping up and down. Can girl semi geeks come too? Actually even Cork Geek AFewPints would do me.

Catherine, I'd love to chat with you at a geek, leave the other fella at home to mind the kids. :)

Will, it's not a costume party, a theme as in some theme for conversation on the night. It'd be nice if we could solve one of the world's problems over a meal or come to some consensus on some bit of tech etc.

Hmm -- Cork is a bit too far for dinner for me

Now you're talking, sounds like a plan. Excellent.

I didn't think it was a costume party... but "theme" was a little vague. Given the fuss over the leaving cert maths levels this year... how about discussing how to make more geeks. Of if we need / want them.

No! There's no such thing. Everyone is a geek of their own interests. Hopefully the future sees everyone able to program a little.

and we need to sort of tell them.... Ok, next blog post is on trying to get tech back in the spotlight. (PK and facebook isn't really something the kids could stand without an e number cocktail)

And what is the hand gesture for geek?

sounds an interesting topic. Talked to head of an engineering course in DCU this week he thinks migrant labour pushing wages down wherears law, accounting more cosseted professions less easily outsourced or affected by migration.

The shift in labour assets is all around Ireland. My brother is arranging to shift Irish-maintained HP services to India where nearly every service function is less expensive to perform. Sit in Dublin's Burlington for most of a weekday and you'll hear similar conversations where Irish companies engage developers from India or China, some working in the UK. I worked for an Indian superfirm during an eight-week stint and met ruthless expectations.

I agree with you Bernie about ruthless expectations. I was contracted into in a Limerick firm, while I was there it started the process of transferring all its functions to India, even though the resulting product was noticeably inferior.

Senior Corporate Management pushed the deal through as it looked nice on their balance sheet. The end result was a poor product that suffered a fall in sales and customer good will. These metrics do not appear anywhere on these balance sheets.
