    I use this channel, http://jaiku.com/channel/rwbstatus, to broadcast to channel members (me basically) when runningwithbulls.com goes down.

    A script (http://www.esyurl.com/3n5) by Justin of the Mason clan (the perl whizz) runs on a machine at home and then sends a message to the channel.

    I can do one for twitter also :P
